Electronic Medical Records A Layman’s guide.

Everyone has become busier than ever before. Modern engineered and scientific advancements along with the internet have changed the life a lot. Be it the ease of transportation or the communication, everything has reached a level of simplification or near simplification. With these advancements modern life style also has acquired the ease of simplified technologies and the need of every business. Hence, world has become busier than ever before. With the introduction of these advancements the work load in every sector has also increased to a very potent level. The physiotherapist who could have a little rest during the library hours now have to work on those extra hours due to the use of online libraries and other resource centers. With such hefty increases in work load the stress level also has gone up. From an expert surgeon to a student everybody has the stress. Even an organization as a whole faces this type of stress. When it comes to the medical and health care sector the most stressful job is keeping the records of patients with different problems accordingly and systematically. Earlier record keepings of the patients were done manually in journals or record books. These record books in turn took the shape of files and eventually heaps of files. And if a patient comes for treatment again after a long period of a year or two, finding his records from those heaps of files was not an easy task for those who were involved in record keeping. In such a situation most of the patients required to register themselves again or required to give their details to the record keeper once again. Also in such a case where previous record, scans, x-rays were mandatory, due to the lack of proper record keeping the patient and the doctor who treats him faces problems. But with the introduction of electronic medical records technology, this type of problem has been sorted out.

Electronic medical records are the medical records in electronic formats. These electronic medical reports may contain patient’s personal detail, pharmacy orders, radiology results, laboratory results, discharge/transfer orders, and any other data from the supportive services. Technically it is a very sound way of keeping and manipulating medical records. Using electronic medical records the records of a patient can easily be stored, read, studied and manipulated by the concerned doctor or the surgeon with ease of mobility. Ease of mobility means that these electronic medical records can be retrieved and manipulated from anywhere by the concerned person/doctor with a handheld PDA or a laptop connected to the LAN of the record keeping stand – alone health information system. The monitoring and the interpretation of records and protection from adverse events are sometime done automatically by some sophisticated electronic medical records software. From the personal detail of the patient to the discharge order of the patient everything can be feed and done accordingly with the help of electronic medical records. The introduction of EMR or electronic medical reports into the system is not a very old one. Being a new concept in the field of medical records, the use of EMR is not very wide spread one. Even in US by 2005, only 25% of the office based doctors and physicians use either fully or partially the electronic medical records technology. And out of this 25% only 70% uses the complete EMR system.

So, if your concerned doctor or the physician is already using electronic medical records technology into his practice, then it’s OK. Otherwise you have to ask for the same next time when you visit your physician in order to save your precious time in near future.
